Adesso ci rimettiamo subito all’opera in vista di Ginevra. Forza!”
THREE WINS AND A PODIUM IN VALENCIA FOR RED BULL ITALY SAILGP TEAM
Valencia, Spain, 6 September 2026 – Three wins from four fleet races and third place in the four-boat final: Red Bull Italy SailGP Team leaves Valencia with its first podium of the season following its strongest weekend of the Rolex SailGP Championship Season 6.
After claiming two victories on Saturday, the Italian team also won Sunday’s only fleet race to secure its place in the final. Racing directly in front of the sold-out grandstands on Valencia’s waterfront, the team crossed the line in third place to complete the city’s inaugural Spain Sail Grand Prix on the podium.
SailGP’s Valencia debut delivered far from straightforward conditions. The Mediterranean breeze remained very light and unstable throughout the weekend, creating a difficult racecourse and forcing the crews to respond quickly to every change in wind strength and direction.
The F50s used their 27-metre wings on both days, the largest configuration and the one best suited to light-air racing. To reduce weight further, the teams competed with four athletes onboard instead of the six normally used on an F50.
Red Bull Italy’s weekend had begun with an early setback. On Saturday morning, a problem with the wing’s hydraulic system caused an oil leak inside the Italian F50. The team responded quickly, getting the boat back on the water in time to focus on the three races ahead.
Supported by the work completed during the short break between Sassnitz and Valencia, Red Bull Italy turned a difficult morning into a day to remember. Two particularly strong starts laid the foundations for two victories from the three races contested, highlighting the progress made over the previous weeks.
Another very light breeze on Sunday allowed only one fleet race to be completed. Red Bull Italy once again made the most of the conditions, claiming its third win of the weekend and securing a place in the four-boat final.
Third place in the deciding race completed a consistent performance across the two days and delivered an important podium as the team heads into the closing stages of the season.
Red Bull Italy SailGP Team CEO Jimmy Spithill said: “A great result for the team and the product of a huge amount of hard work together. Now we get straight back to work ahead of Geneva. Forza!”
Phil Robertson, driver of the Red Bull Italy SailGP Team, said: “It was a fantastic weekend here in Valencia and probably our best result to date. We managed to qualify for the Final and raced well there too, so we’re really pleased. We also won three of the four fleet races, which is something not many teams have managed to achieve in the past. It was a great weekend and there’s a huge amount of satisfaction across the whole team, especially considering how much work has gone on behind the scenes. Now we’re really looking forward to Geneva.”
Strategist Jana Germani added: “It was a really positive weekend. We won three of the four races, mainly thanks to some great starts and the fact that we sailed really well. We’re very happy. It’s a shame about the Final, where we were just a little early at the start, but we still managed to stay in the fight right to the end. Overall, we’re extremely pleased with the weekend.”
SailGP’s debut in Valencia brought high-performance sailing back to a city with a central place in the sport’s recent history. After hosting the 32nd America’s Cup in 2007 and the 33rd edition in 2010, Valencia’s waterfront welcomed the F50 fleet for the first time, with the racecourse positioned just metres from the grandstands and the finish line directly in front of the crowd.
The Italian team had the opportunity to become familiar with the venue during several training sessions in the days leading up to the weekend, valuable preparation ahead of two demanding days of racing.
The week in Valencia also featured three different activations organised by Red Bull España, bringing together competition, local culture and entertainment. Red Bull Italy took on the Spanish team in a challenge away from the F50s and had the opportunity to sail traditional Vela Latina boats, one of the most distinctive elements of Valencia’s maritime heritage.
On Friday, bike trial world champion Kenny Belaey visited the Italian base and performed a spectacular stunt in front of the team’s F50.
On Saturday, the Red Bull Italy SailGP Team welcomed Fiumicino Mayor Mario Baccini and Porto di Roma Director Alessandro Mei, whose respective locations will host the technical bases for the Italy Sail Grand Prix.
The meeting provided an opportunity to start looking ahead to the championship’s next Italian event, when SailGP will arrive in Ostia on 11–12 September 2027.Following its Valencia podium, Red Bull Italy now turns its attention to Geneva for the final event of the European leg of the Rolex SailGP Championship. The fleet will then head to Dubai before the Season 6 title is decided at the Abu Dhabi Grand Final.
